Join us for an evening presentation and conversation with artists Jillian Mayer and Abigail Reyes, moderated by Arden Sherman, Glenn W. & Cornelia T. Bailey Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. An opening event for the summer exhibition, Reflecting the Gaze: Abigail Reyes and Jillian Mayer, which features two video works by the contemporary female artists that challenge how women "should" or are "meant to" behave and be seen. Through editing telenovelas and the story of Venus de Milo, Mayer and Reyes shift the typically male-oriented, societal gaze on the women’s space. The videos are accompanied by selections from the Norton's Collection that redirect and repossess the positioning of women’s place in history. 

Jillian Mayer was born in 1984 in Miami, Florida. She is a sculptor, visual performance artist, and filmmaker. Through videos, sculptures, online experiences, photography, performances, and installations, Mayer explores how our lives, bodies, and identities are impacted and reshaped by our participation in a digital landscape. 

Abigail Reyes was born in 1984 in San Salvador, El Salvador. She lives and works in La Libertad, El Salvador. Reyes is a graphic designer, visual artist and poet who explores the social structures and the female space inside those traditional patriarchal systems.
